Food Manufacturing Plant Opens in Reno - KTVN Channel 2 - Reno Tahoe News Weather, Video -
Thursday, a new manufacturing business opened some pretty big
doors. Looking around his new 100,000 square-foot facility in west Reno,
Nutrient Foods chairman Peter Castleman couldn't keep it to himself, so
he told us: "This is a great place to be, so we located here." Taking
us to the test kitchen, he told us, "This is where all the creative
juices run to create these wonderful foods."
Last year, 34
companies relocated to our area…chalk up another one. Nutrient Foods
comes from Princeton, New Jersey. They just opened the doors to their
new commercial production facility on west 4th Street near Mayberry,
making nutrient-dense foods they'll sell to individual distributors,
pretty much in the same way Amway sells products. Close to 50 employees
are going to be working at this new plant. Castleman says they were
hired locally. They pay pretty well too: “On an hourly basis, we'll be
north of $20 an hour. That's where it starts at.”
And the company
says this is all just the beginning. There are big plans and hopes
here. Nutrient Foods CEO Chip Marsland told us, “We're going to export
worldwide and touch every corner of the world, something I believe is
unique to this area."
This will be the company's first
manufacturing plant in the state. Their first full day of production? As
soon as they can…they say in just a couple of weeks. For the folks at
EDAWN, it's much more than just new jobs…it's a big boost for all of us.
EDAWN's CEO Mike Kazmierski said, "We're actually in a better position
than most communities experiencing this kind of growth."
50 new
jobs is another chip away at the unemployment rate. From 2011's high of
14.2% in Reno, it has fallen all the way down to 6.5%. Kazmierski says
expect that to fall even further, to a very low number. As he told us,
“Down to 4.5% by the end of this year or early next year." He knows
that's a bold prediction, but said, "We can see what's happening. Not
counting Tesla, which is an exciting component, we expect another 3,000
to 4,000 jobs at least this year."
And while he works behind the
scenes for that, Reno's New Jersey transplants will be thinking big, in
west Reno. As their chairman Peter Castleman said at the end of our
interview, "Our hope that we'll need to expand in Reno and continue to
grow."

Delicious High Protein Apple Almond Granola
Almond Granola
Very low glycemic
Turn on oven to 350
1/4 cup coconut oil
1 tbsp raw honey
2 tbsp xylitol or 1/4 cup of honey
1/2 tsp natural vanilla
3/4 tsp sea salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon
2 package YEVO Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal mix (43 essential nutrients, 26g of Protein per serving!!)
1 cup almonds, chopped
1/2 cup sunflower seeds
1 cup shredded coconut unsweetened
1 cup naturally organic raisins
Gently heat coconut oil, honey, xylitol, and vanilla in saucepan.
Add cinnamon, nutmeg and sea salt, mix and remove from heat.
Place all dry ingredients in bowl, add warmed mixture wet ingredients.
Mix in bowl thoroughly, and spread on sheet pan.
Bake for 8-10 minutes or until lightly golden brown
let cool, then scrape off pan into container.
Serve with coconut yogurt, with fruit, or as a snack anytime
